When and how to use AI for grading and feedback
Overview: Use it for a first pass on mechanical, criteria-based work, and for drafting feedback language you then edit. Do not use it to decide a grade or anywhere the right response depends on knowing the student. The goal is that AI drafts and you judge. Never send feedback to anyone that you have not read.
Grading is where the temptation to hand everything over to AI is strongest, because grading is where teachers are most exhausted. It's also where handing everything over goes wrong fastest, because grading is where a student most needs an adult who actually knows them to be paying attention.

Where it genuinely helps
AI is reasonably good at structured, rubric-aligned tasks: checking whether a required element is present, flagging obvious grammar and mechanics issues, generating a first-pass comment you'll then rewrite in your own voice. It's fast at the parts of grading that are more about compliance than judgment, which frees up your attention for the parts that actually require it.
Where it falls apart
It doesn't know this student. It doesn't know that this essay is the most effort a particular kid has put in all semester, or that this shaky paragraph is actually a huge improvement from where they started in September. Grading isn't only measuring the work against a standard, it's also responding to a specific student's growth, and that context lives with you, not with a tool that's seeing the piece for the first time with no history attached to it.
A useful middle ground
The teachers who use AI well here treat it as a first draft of a comment, not a finished one. Generate a rough note, then edit in the one detail that makes it clearly about this student and this piece of work, not a generic version that could apply to anyone. Protecting your own judgment
The real risk isn't that AI grades badly. It's that leaning on it consistently can quietly erode your own sense of what a strong or weak piece of work looks like, the same way autopilot can erode a pilot's manual instincts over time. Use it to save time on the mechanical parts of grading, and stay hands-on with the parts that require actually knowing your students.

Using it for feedback, not just grades
Grading and feedback are different jobs, and AI is much better at the second one.
A grade is a judgment. Feedback is language. Judgment is the part that requires knowing the student, and language is the part that eats your evenings. So the split that works is that you decide what the student needs to hear, and AI helps you say it without writing the same sentence forty times.
What that looks like in practice. Read the work and note the one or two things that matter, in shorthand, for yourself. Then hand AI your rubric, your shorthand notes, and the tone you want, and ask it to draft the comment. What comes back is a starting point you edit, not a comment you send.
Three rules keep this honest.
- Read every word before it goes out. This is the whole thing. A comment you have not read is a comment you cannot stand behind when a parent asks about it.
- Keep the specific detail yours. AI can write "your evidence needs to connect more directly to your claim." It cannot write "the Douglass quote in paragraph three is doing work your thesis never asks for." The second one is the sentence the student remembers.
- Never paste identifiable student writing into a tool your district has not vetted. Strip names, or use the district's approved tool. This is a records question, not a preference.
When to reach for it, and when not to
Reach for it when the work is criteria-based and the feedback is patterned. A stack of lab reports where six students made the same procedural error. A set of paragraphs where the issue is structure rather than thinking. Comment banks you will reuse across a whole class.
Do not reach for it when the response depends on knowing this student. A piece of writing where the student took a real risk. Work from a kid who has been struggling and finally turned something in. Anything where the right feedback is partly about the relationship rather than the rubric. Those take four minutes each and they are the four minutes that matter.
