Common Questions
Most group generators have no memory. Press the button twice and you get two unrelated results, which means that over a semester some students end up working together six times and some never once. Group Maker remembers past groupings and prioritizes new connections. After each set it tells you how many repeat pairs there were.
Both. Open Advanced options and add the pairs. These are treated as firm rules rather than preferences. If a set of rules cannot be satisfied, for instance three students who all have to be kept apart when you have only two groups, the tool tells you in plain language and suggests what to change. It will not quietly put two students together who you said should not be.
Your class list is saved in your own browser, on your own device. It is not uploaded anywhere and nobody at The Faculty Lounge can see it. If you want the same rosters on your laptop and your classroom computer, there is a switch next to your class list that saves them to your signed-in account. It is off by default, and switching it back off deletes the saved copy rather than just stopping updates. Note that if you clear your browser data while the switch is off, your saved classes go with it.
Yes, switch between Groups of and Number of groups. Either way, students are spread as evenly as the numbers allow. Twenty-two students in groups of four becomes 4, 4, 4, 5, 5 rather than five groups of four and a lonely pair.
Tap any name in the Absent today row and that student is left out of today's groups while staying on your class list. This is the fastest way to regroup at 8:02am when three kids did not show up.
Yes. Drag any student from one group to another, lock a group you are happy with and re-roll the rest, or re-roll one group on its own. When you are done, print the groups or copy them as plain text to drop into your slides.
